So it is almost October. Here, in Toronto, fall officially began. It is approximately 17-20 degrees Celsius now, but guess what, I feel soooo cold already. Yeah. And no, the fact that I come all the way from Belarus, doesn’t help me. I feel cold.
So I decided to turn on my fireplace that was resting for the whole summer. But then I saw this dirty glass, white foggy build-up from fire on the inside of the glass. Well it needs to be clean in order to look awesome 🙂 Before I knew how to do it I was frustrated, but hey, it is actually very easy. I will share it with you. Well, at least with the ones that don’t know how to do it. It’s pretty easy.
So this is how it looked like before I gave it a good cleanup. Yes, there are kids fingerprints on it as well. But these ones are easily removed by Windex from the outside, unlike the foggy build-up from the inside….
So. lets get to straight business 🙂
First, make sure your gas and fire are completely OFF. And make sure the glass is cold.
Your fireplace should provide you with a manual including instructions on how to properly open the glass considering each fireplace model is different. However if you do not have one on you, most of them are opening in a pretty much the same way with a few minor details.
Second, take off the lower and top metal panels. This will provide access to the lower and upper latches. This is how it looks like after I removed the panels. You might want to pull the panel up and then pull it away.
You then will need to disengage the latches. My fireplace has latches only at the bottom ( on both left and right sides). Your model might have some latches at the top as well.
You then will have to remove or open up your glass “door”. In my model you will need to grab the glass from the bottom and pull toward yourself a bit so it will “unstick” from the main unit. You then will need to just push it up and hold it, so it won’t fell down. Your model might be made like a door, so you will just need to open it to the side 🙂
This is picture of my glass. I hold it open with a hand.
Next, place the glass somewhere on the safe soft spot. Blanket, yoga mat, towel…anything. I placed mine on top of my yoga mat. Put the glass with the dirty side up.
Make sure you use ONLY a Gas Fireplace Glass Cleaner from your local store. Do NOT use anything else like Windex…it will have and adverse effect …..Trust me on that one!!! 🙂
Get couple clean, soft dry cloths. Apply a small amount of cleaner to the cloth.
Wipe the glass in a circular motion. Until you feel the cloth easily gliding on the glass surface. That means that any build-up on the glass has been cleaned off. My glass was too dirty and the build-up didn’t go away easily. I had to get a brush and repeat the rubbing and buffing with a brush. After you are done, take another clean dry cloth and wipe the remaining cleaner off the glass. Wait till the glass is dry and put it back in.
Now you can relax and enjoy your sparkle clean glass fireplace 🙂
